Rome, one of the most iconic cities in history, traces its name back to the legendary tale of Romulus and Remus. According to Roman mythology, these twin brothers were abandoned as infants and raised by a she-wolf. As adults, they decided to build a city near the Tiber River. A dispute arose between them over who would rule the new settlement. Romulus ultimately killed Remus and became the first king of Rome, naming the city after himself. This legend is central to Rome’s founding myth and has endured for centuries as part of its rich cultural heritage.

Where to stay in Rome
Day 2: Visit the top attractions of Rome combined with a culinary experience
When exploring Rome on day 2 of your Rome itinerary, make sure to visit the iconic Colosseum and Vatican City for a glimpse into the city’s rich history and architecture. These top attractions offer a fascinating journey through ancient ruins and religious wonders.
Important tip: To visit the Colosseum and the Roman Forum during your weekend in Rome, the best option is the combined ticket which cost 18 euro. The important thing to remember is that the entrance in the Colosseum is in a particular time which is noted on your ticket. So my advice is to visit the Roman Forum first, because you can enter there at any time. Be aware that the Roman Forum is huge. You will need at least 1 hour or hour and a half to walk around. So book the Colosseum entrance according that time.
For example if you arrive at the Colosseum around 13:00 o’clock, book the Colosseum entrance for 15:00. This way you will have 1.30 hours for visiting the Roman Forum, some rest time and be at the entrance of the Colosseum 10 minutes before the actual time on your ticket, which is the advised time for entrance.
After soaking in the grandeur of these renowned landmarks, consider venturing off-the-beaten-path to discover the hidden gems of Rome. Explore charming neighborhoods like Trastevere or Monti, where you can experience the local culture and vibrant atmosphere away from the tourist crowds.
To truly immerse yourself in Roman culture, indulge in a culinary experience that showcases the city’s foodie delights. From traditional pasta dishes to delectable gelato, a weekend in Rome offers a gastronomic adventure that will tantalize your taste buds.
By combining visits to top attractions with local experiences and culinary delights, you can create a well-rounded Rome itinerary that captures the essence of Rome’s diverse offerings. Make the most of your time in this enchanting city by embracing both its historical treasures and modern charms.
Summary:
- Morning: Explore Ancient Wonders at the Colosseum and Roman Forum
- Afternoon: Discover Artistic Marvels at Vatican City and St. Peter’s Basilica
- Evening: Stroll Through Trastevere’s Charming Streets and have dinner in one of the best street food spots in Rome

Next, treat yourself to a gelato tasting adventure. Rome is renowned for its delicious gelato, and there’s no better way to bid farewell to this beautiful city than by savoring scoops of creamy goodness in various flavors. From classic favorites like pistachio and stracciatella to more adventurous options like fig and ricotta, there’s a gelato flavor for every palate.
