Train companies offering this scenic journey and how much does it cost
When traveling from Prague to Vienna, there are several train options available that offer scenic journeys through picturesque landscapes. Two popular train companies that operate on this route are RegioJet and OBB trains.
RegioJet provides a comfortable and modern travel experience with amenities such as free Wi-Fi and onboard entertainment. On the other hand, OBB trains offer a more traditional yet reliable service for passengers.
The train schedule from Prague to Vienna is frequent, with multiple departures throughout the day. The journey typically takes around 4 hours, making it a convenient option for travelers looking to explore both cities in a day.
Train convenience
RegioJet
I used the services of RegioJet from Prague to Vienna train many times and in almost every seat category possible. I think the journey with them is almost perfect. The trains are very clean and very well maintained. The seats are very comfortable and the leg room is always good. They have 4 class tiers of their tickets. 3 of them are equal to 2nd class and one is first class:
Low Cost (2nd class) – this is the lowest tier, but still comfortable with enough legroom.
Standard (2nd class) – maybe the best value for money. Super comfortable seats that recline back quite a lot and tons of leg room for a comfortable sleep if needed. They even have entertainment TV screens on the back of each seat of the Prague to Vienna train. You can watch movies, listen to music (you will need headphones with 3.5 mm jack, which you can by for a very low price from the attendants), and many more. For this class and the Low Cost you have to order food and beverages through the RegioJet’s app.
Relax (2nd class) – again super comfortable seats. For me they are similar with the Standard class, with maybe a little bit more leg room. The don’t have the entertainment screens though. You can use your device (laptop, tablet or phone) and log on to their network and stream the same movies etc.
Business (1st class) – these are separate compartments with 4 seats in each. The seats are super comfortable and big. Again not entertainment screens. Here and in the Relax class you can order the food service to the attendant. You get one bottle of prosecco and a water for free with your ticket. For the rest of the classes you get only a bottle of water for free.
There are charging plugs on every seat in every class and the WiFi is free for the whole journey. But the cherry on top is the food service in RegioJet’s Prague to Vienna train. The food is so good and so cheap you will not believe it at first. We often joke with friends that it would be cheaper to live in the train than at home. Really, the prices are insanely low and the food is very good for a train ride of course. There is also a restaurant cart where you can enjoy a meal or a drink from a menu.
They also have a kids compartment where the little ones can entertain themselves during the trip.
OBB
To be honest I haven’t used the services of OBB for Prague to Vienna train line, but I have used their services for other lines. OBB is the Austrian Federal Railways and they are the main train services provider in Austria. They have a very complicated categorization of their services depending on the train type, compartment etc. You can learn more on their website here – https://www.oebb.at/en/reiseplanung-services/im-zug/abteile-komfortklassen. Usually their trains are well maintained for the longer journeys, but they offer less services when you compare them to the RegioJet. For example there is not kids area or TV entertainment. Also the cost of food and services are usually higher.
Schedule
RegioJet
Usually the RegioJet offers 4 departures per day for the Prague to Vienna train line. The used to offer options to go directly to the Vienna airport with the train, but they have discontinued this option.
OBB
OBB has a lot more options for departures throughout the day.
Where to stay in Vienna
Cost
When we compare the prices of RegioJet and OBB for the Prague to Vienna train, RegioJet have the big advantage here. RegioJet’s prices start from as low as 11 euro one way, which is about 12 USD. And you regularly can get this price if you book at lease week or two in advance. Not to mention that for the higher classes and even business class you can get prices as low as 18 euro.
OBB usually is quite expensive, even though I have seen rates starting from 14.99 euro one way, but those are for the night trains or the early morning. Most of the time their prices are around 85 euro which is crazy high, especially when there is competitor with better service with lower prices.
Where to book
You can book tickets for the Prague to Vienna train through RegioJet’s website or the app. I recommend don loading the app, because you will probably need it anyway when you are on board the train.
The tickets for the OBB train network are bookable from their website and they also have an app.
